Bo Bengtson

Born in Sweden, Bo has been involved in dogs since childhood. Initially he was active as an exhibitor, taking his first big win — Best in Show at the international show in Stockholm with a Whippet — as a teenager in 1963. Later he has also been a breeder, judge, writer and publisher. The Bohem “kennel,” although averaging less than a litter per year, has produced at least 30 Best-in-Show winners , and 130 champions in the U.S., Europe, Australia and Asia. The majority were Whippets, in which Bohem has had a profound influence worldwide, but there have also been homebred champions in Greyhounds and Afghan Hounds.
Bo started writing about dogs for the Swedish KC magazine Hundsport in the 1960s and ‘70s; wrote a highly successful pet column for daily Svenska Dagbladet and Expressen (circ. over 1 million); and moved to Australia in late 1970s to work for National Dog magazine prior to settling permanently in California in 1980.
He is currently approved by FCI to judge 40 breeds and Best in Show, and regularly approved by AKC to judge all Sighthounds, Basenjis, Rhodesian Ridgebacks, Dachshunds and Golden Retrievers.

Since the 1970s Bo has judged in more than 20 countries in Scandinavia, Europe, North, Central and South America, the Caribbean, Australia and New Zealand, Russia, Japan and China, including many times Best in Show at all-breed shows. Major assignments include Crufts (twice), Westminster (twice), and the FCI World Show (four times). He has judged more than 80 specialty shows in 15 countries, including the U.S. National Specialty shows for Whippets, Greyhounds, Scottish Deerhounds, and Borzoi (2013). He has also judged the parent club Top 20 events for Afghan Hounds, Whippets and Golden Retrievers.
Contributor to English Dog World and Dog World Annual since 1970s, as well as AKC Gazette and many other publications in the U.S., and to various overseas dog magazines, including in Russia, China and Japan. He currently writes a monthly column in the Swedish KC magazine Hundsport (circ. over 100,000) and is Senior Editor of Best in Show Daily.

In 1984 Bo founded the bi-monthly magazine Sighthound Review, for which he also was editor and publisher. It achieved worldwide circulation and won the DWAA Best Multi-breed Magazine award in 1995. He also edited the award-winning The Afghan Hound Review and Poodle Variety.
In 1997, in partnership with Paul Lepiane, Bo founded the monthly Dogs in Review, for many years established as the world’s leading dog show magazine. Starting as a 48-page newspaper, DR grew into a glossy publication, printing 250-350 pages per issue on a regular basis in the early 2000s, with Annuals exceeding 500 pages. In 2003 DR was purchased by BowTie Inc., with Bo remaining as Editor-at-Large through 2012. He is also Editor-at-Large of Sighthound Review, now published by Denise Flaim and Theresa Lyons.

Bo is the author of several award-winning dog books. They include the 1970s Dogs of the World (IBP Publishing, Sweden), which was widely translated and sold over 500,000 copies worldwide. The classic monography The Whippet was initially published in 1985; a second, revised edition appeared in 1994 from MIP Publishing in the U.S. The most recent, enlarged 350-page revision, titled The Whippet – an Authoritative Look at the Breed’s Past, Present and Future was published by KC Books and won the APDW award for Best Non-Fiction Book in 2012. Bo is also the author of the monumental, critically acclaimed 656-page Best in Show – the World of Show Dogs and Dog Shows (KC Books 2008), winner of the Independent Book Publishers Association’s Benjamin Franklin award for Best Reference Book 2009, reputedly a unique honor for a dog show book, as well as Best Book awards from both DWAA and APDW.
